The July 5th weekend marked Subaru IRONMAN 70.3 Muskoka. And many athletes who raced that race are planning to race both the IRONMAN 70.3 and the IRONMAN which is on the same course, 8 weeks later on August 30th. Athletes who race both races are part of a unique group of “Tough Toonie” athletes. This means that they get a medal and t-shirt for completing each event – the IRONMAN 70.3 and the IRONMAN and they get another medal and t-shirt for completing them both! There is no question that it is a daunting task to race the IRONMAN 70.3 and then double that fun course to become an IRONMAN finisher and Tough Toonie finisher!
The 8-week training block will see an increase in swim, bike and run volume and some key transition workouts. During those transition workouts, athletes can not only get fitter physically but they can perfect their nutrition and work on their mental game. Nutrition is triathlon’s 4th sport and mental preparation is the 5th sport. Both are equally important. An athlete who is 100% fit but mentally weak or negative will not reach their potential. But I believe that an athlete who is 85% fit can rise to the occasion and maximize their potential with a positive mental attitude.
Take a peak at the above slides from my presentation and take those with you for the next 8-week block leading to IRONMAN Muskoka. See you at our camp in Muskoka on July 24-26th OR see you at the finish line on August 30th.
